How long can mixed reef saltwater be stored?

Before storage: make a clean batch

1. Use a clean, reef-safe mixing container and a dedicated pump or heater.
2. Start with RODI water and bring it near the product’s stated mixing temperature—Aquaforest lists about 24°C.
3. Weigh the salt rather than relying only on a scoop; use the product’s grams-per-litre table.
4. Add salt gradually to moving water and mix until clear. Aquaforest lists about 15 minutes for Reef Salt.
5. Measure salinity with a calibrated refractometer or conductivity instrument before use.
6. Match temperature and salinity to the tank, then recheck the tank before a large change.

For the complete measurement sequence, use the reef saltwater mixing guide. Storage cannot rescue a batch that started with poor source water, incorrect salinity or contaminated equipment.

Storage is a chemistry decision

Keep dry salt sealed in a dry, dark place so humidity does not create clumps or change the effective weight of the mix. Store prepared water in a closed reef-safe container to reduce evaporation, and recheck salinity before use if it has been sitting.

Why brands give different time limits

Some mixes can be stored longer than others because dissolved calcium, alkalinity and trace elements can change or precipitate. Red Sea’s own guidance says to keep mixed water sealed and dark for about seven days for standard Red Sea Salt, but recommends using Coral Pro within 12 hours. Aquaforest says to use dissolved Reef Salt within three days. Those are not interchangeable rules.

Cloudy water and precipitation

Cloudiness after mixing can be caused by overheating, overmixing or adding too much salt too quickly. Stop and check the instructions, temperature and salinity rather than adding more salt to “clear” it. If a new batch repeatedly behaves differently, test calcium, alkalinity and salinity before using it in a sensitive system.
