Beginner Reef Mistakes to Avoid

Moving too fast, overstocking, overfeeding, tap water and topping up with saltwater. The mistakes that catch most new reef keepers, and the habits that prevent them.

Most beginner reef mistakes come down to impatience and skipped basics: adding livestock too fast, overstocking, overfeeding, using tap water, topping up with saltwater, skipping water changes and not testing. Slow down, use RODI water, top up with fresh water, test weekly and keep a record of what you do.

The ten mistakes

Bulk Reef Supply’s list of the top ten nano reef mistakes applies to most new tanks.

  • Moving too fast. Livestock before the tank is ready. See how to cycle.
  • Irresponsible stocking. Too many fish, or fish that outgrow the tank. See when to add fish.
  • Overfeeding. The biggest source of excess nitrate and phosphate. See high nitrate.
  • Using tap water. It can carry phosphate, nitrate, silicate and metals. Use RODI water.
  • Not enough water changes. See how often to change water.
  • Fussing with the skimmer. Small skimmers can need time to settle; don’t keep adjusting.
  • Neglecting filter media. Socks and floss left too long add nutrients back. See filter socks.
  • Topping up with saltwater. Salt doesn’t evaporate. Top up with fresh RODI water. See salinity.
  • Not testing. You can’t fix what you don’t measure.
  • Neglecting the basics. Temperature, salinity, flow, routine.

The habits that prevent them

A weekly routine catches almost all of these: a water change, tests for the key results, filter socks, glass, and a quick daily look. Write it down, so you can see what changed when something goes wrong.

The Companion turns those habits into a list of what’s due today, with reminders if you create an account.
