Reef maintenance guide

Going on Holiday With a Reef Tank

A settled reef can run on its own for 5–7 days. What to set up weeks before, what to write for your tank-sitter, and what not to change before you go.

Bulk Reef Supply says a settled tank can run on its own for 5–7 days. Set up any new automation, such as an auto top-off or dosing pump, weeks before you go, not the day before. Fill the top-off reservoir, test the battery backup, write clear notes for whoever checks in, and don’t change anything in the last week.

Weeks before

Bulk Reef Supply’s timings:

  • Install an auto top-off at least a couple of weeks before, and make sure it has worked reliably for at least 5–7 days
  • Run a new dosing pump for at least 2–4 weeks before you leave
  • Test that your battery backup holds a charge and starts on its own
  • Set up alerts for temperature, pH or leaks if you have a controller

The last week

Don’t make changes: no new livestock, no new equipment, no dosing changes. Do your normal water change and maintenance a few days before you go, so the tank is clean but settled.

Fill the top-off reservoir completely, and leave refill instructions. Load an auto feeder with fresh batteries, and keep it away from splashes.

Notes for your tank-sitter

Bulk Reef Supply says not to skimp on detail, and suggests a friend checks in every few days. Write down:

  • What normal looks like: temperature, the sound of the pumps, the water level in the sump
  • How to refill the top-off reservoir, and with what (RODI water, never saltwater)
  • How much to feed, if at all. Underfeeding is far safer than overfeeding
  • What to do in a power cut. See power cuts
  • Who to call if something looks wrong

Hand over the routine

In the Companion, pause tasks that will wait until you’re back, and leave the ones your sitter will do. When you return, check temperature and salinity first, then pick up where you left off.

Common questions

How long can a reef tank go without maintenance?

Bulk Reef Supply says a settled tank can run on autopilot for 5–7 days.

Should I feed before going on holiday?

Feed normally. Most fish manage a few days without food better than a tank manages overfeeding.

Do I need a tank-sitter for a week?

For a week, a friend checking every few days is sensible. For longer, someone who can do basic maintenance.
