A safe starting workflow
- Confirm the test kit is fresh and repeat calcium and alkalinity readings.
- Record the tank’s actual water volume, recent water changes and current dosing.
- Use the additive maker’s calculator to set a conservative starting dose.
- Split the daily volume into small additions and keep the two parts physically separate.
- Re-test after the manufacturer’s suggested interval before increasing or reducing the dose.
Why the parts stay separate
Calcium and carbonate solutions can react when concentrated. Dose them into separate high-flow areas, keep the lines apart and follow any minimum separation time in the product instructions. Seachem, for example, says never to mix Reef Fusion 1 and 2 directly and recommends adding them to separate locations.
Measure stability, not a perfect number
Use the salt mix and additive system’s stated ranges as your reference. A repeatable alkalinity trend is usually more useful than a single “ideal” value. If alkalinity moves quickly, stop and investigate test error, evaporation, salinity, precipitation or a pump fault before making a large correction.
Watch salinity and ionic balance
Two-part additions add ions to the water. Over time, salinity and the balance of major ions can drift, so maintain normal water-change practice and check salinity with the same care as calcium and alkalinity. If the system’s chemistry requires a different method, do not use a two-part calculator as a substitute for that method’s instructions.
Common failure modes
- Using nominal pump output instead of calibrating each channel.
- Letting an alkalinity line and calcium line meet in the same container or fitting.
- Changing both the dose and the salt mix on the same day.
- Continuing to dose when a test result is clearly impossible or a container has run dry.
