Mounting a reef light higher usually increases spread and colour blending while reducing peak intensity and sending more light into the room. Mounting lower usually concentrates output and reduces spill, but can create hotspots, harder shadows and greater exposure to salt spray. There is no universal ideal height.
Use the exact fixture’s approved mount and starting guidance. Measure from the water surface to the light or lens consistently, record waterline-to-coral depth separately, and map the intended coral zone before changing intensity. Define the two distances people confuse
Mounting height normally describes the distance from the water surface to a fixture reference point, but manufacturers may define it differently. Coral depth describes the distance from the water surface to the target. Adding them gives the approximate source-to-target path before refraction and geometry are considered.
Record both values in centimetres and note the aquarium’s operating water level. Evaporation in an uncovered tank changes the surface distance, while an ATO stabilises it. A copied ‘20cm high’ recommendation is useless if it is unclear whether it means above the rim, water or coral.

Higher is not simply better coverage
Raising a light enlarges the illuminated area, but the same output is distributed more broadly and more escapes beyond the glass. The edges may become more even while every point becomes lower. A high mount can also expose viewers to glare and brighten the room ceiling or walls.
Use height to shape the field, not to rescue a fixture that is fundamentally too narrow. If acceptable spread requires an impractically high, glaring installation, a second source or different optic is the more coherent solution.

Lower is not simply more PAR
Lowering can increase central intensity, but it may worsen a hotspot and create abrupt fall-off around rock. It also places the fixture nearer salt spray and makes access to the aquarium harder. Some mounts and lenses have minimum clearances that should not be ignored.
A low fixture can work on a compact island where spill is undesirable, provided the field remains blended and the target is controlled. Reduce output during changes and remeasure rather than assuming the same schedule is safe at the new distance.

Glare and the UK living-room test
Many reef tanks sit beside sofas, dining tables or desks. A mount that looks clean while standing may expose bright diodes when seated. Before drilling or committing to a rail, use a cardboard marker at the proposed height and view it from normal seats and doorways.
Approved shades and diffusers can improve comfort and visual blending, but may change intensity and heat management. Include them in the installed cost and repeat measurements after adding them. Do not improvise materials close to a hot fixture or obstruct ventilation.

Mounts, lids and service access
A rear arm needs enough clamp depth, suitable glass thickness and clearance from filtration chambers. Hanging kits need secure structure and a safe load path. Rails must allow the light to be moved or removed without dismantling the whole tank. Follow the manufacturer hardware instructions rather than substituting an unverified fastener.
Leave space to open lids, remove skimmer cups and clean the lens. Route every cable with a drip loop and keep power connections away from water. If the installation requires fixed household electrical work, use a competent electrician.

A controlled tuning sequence
Install at the maker’s recommended starting height. Set a conservative programme, map the coral zone and record glare and spill. If the centre is high and edges weak, change height modestly and repeat the same grid before increasing output. If a structural shadow remains, test position or source count rather than continuing upward.
After choosing height, secure the mount, save the programme and photograph the ruler reference. Use acclimation when changing intensity, optics or height around livestock. Review the arrangement after coral growth changes the field.

Mounting height is part of the fixture specification. A review that compares lights without their intended mount and height omits a major performance variable. We therefore compare the complete mounted package and treat third-party accessories as separate configurations.
The best height is not the number that creates the largest centre reading. It is the safe, serviceable position that produces a usable distribution across the intended coral zone with acceptable room spill and controllable headroom.
WORKED UK EXAMPLE
Correcting a hotspot over a 50cm cube
A compact light sits 12cm above the water. The upper centre reads much higher than intended, while the lower outer shelves are comparatively dim and viewers see strong colour separation. The owner first considers reducing all channels, but that would make the outer shelves weaker.
The light is raised within the approved mounting range and the same grid is repeated. The centre falls, edges improve and blending becomes smoother, but sofa-level glare increases. An approved shade is added and the map is repeated because the accessory can alter delivery. Output is then adjusted conservatively. The final height is recorded as a system setting, not remembered as a generic rule for the product.
THE REEF BENCH CHECK
What this page can—and cannot—prove
Electrical input, physical dimensions, published spread, control method and included accessories are facts that can be checked. They help eliminate unsuitable choices and expose the complete installed cost. They do not prove the PAR at a coral, long-term colour response, fan noise in your room or reliability over several years. Those outcomes depend on the individual unit, installation, programme, water, aquascape and maintenance.
Before changing a working aquarium, record the present fixture, mounting height, schedule, channel intensities and livestock positions. Photograph the tank under the same settings and, where coral demand justifies it, borrow or rent a suitable PAR meter. Change one meaningful variable at a time, begin conservatively and use acclimation controls. A copied online schedule is a starting hypothesis, not evidence that the same percentages will suit another aquarium.
Our recommendations therefore use conditional language. “Best for” means the product or layout solves the stated constraint more convincingly on documented evidence; it does not mean every buyer should choose it. A lower-cost fixture can be the stronger decision for a compact soft-coral island, while a higher-cost system becomes defensible when broader distribution, multiple-light coordination or future expansion is a real requirement.

Compare the complete mounted system
Add the fixture, arm or hanging kit, rail, diffuser or shade, controller where required, and any second light needed for the intended footprint. Then calculate electricity from the programmed output and photoperiod rather than assuming the label maximum runs all day. A premium light may justify its cost through distribution or control; it does not justify itself merely by having a higher wattage or a longer feature list.
Also price the parts most likely to interrupt ownership: power supplies, fans, mounting hardware and the route for UK warranty support. App-based control is convenient, but confirm how the fixture behaves after a power cut, router change or service outage. Save the manual and final schedule outside the app. The best installation remains understandable and recoverable when the phone or internet is unavailable.
