The four measurements
Measure from the pump’s water surface to the return outlet—not from the cabinet floor.
Smaller pipe increases resistance. Match the aquarium’s bulkhead and manufacturer connection guidance.
Every elbow, valve, tee, reducer, diffuser and restrictive outlet adds resistance.
Choose a delivered-flow target first, then find that point on the curve above your measured head.
Worked example: 1.2m lift
At a measured 1.2m vertical lift, a pump advertised at 4,000 l/h may deliver substantially less than 4,000 l/h. Add long pipe, elbows and a return nozzle, then read the manufacturer’s curve at that combined resistance. If the curve is unavailable, treat the box maximum as an upper bound and leave adjustment headroom.
DC versus AC return pumps
DC pumps make speed adjustment, feed pauses and emergency settings easier. AC pumps can be inexpensive and simple, but usually offer less fine control. The useful question is not “which is modern?”—it is whether the control, spare parts and failure behaviour suit your system.
Do not oversize blindly
Oversizing can increase noise, power use, overflow noise and valve-throttling. A controllable pump with headroom is often easier to tune than a fixed pump running at its limit, but every extra feature adds purchase cost and another controller or failure point.
